Eight Offline AI Drives, Compared on Their Own Published Claims
This comparison covers eight offline AI drives. Seven of them you can buy and use today; one is not shipping yet. The marketing reads almost identically across all of them — an AI that works with no internet, a library of survival manuals, no subscription — which makes the category unusually difficult to evaluate from the outside. Nearly everything below is built from what each company publishes about its own product, read from their sites on 21 and 22 August 2026.
One rule shapes the whole thing. Where a company does not mention a capability, this comparison says "not mentioned on their site" rather than claiming they lack it. That is what was actually checked: a search of their published pages returning nothing. It is not the same as the feature being absent, and treating it as though it were would be manufacturing an advantage out of someone else's copywriting.
The eight products, each listed with its web address because two of the names are close enough to confuse: Off-Grid AI at offgridai.io, Docket Survival at docketoffline.ai, Trove at trovedrive.com, DrAcher AI at drachershop.com, OffGrid Drive at offgriddrive.com, BunkerAI at bunkerai.io, PortableMind at portablemind.io, and OffGrid AI Toolkit at offgridaitoolkit.com. That last one is a separate company with no connection to Off-Grid AI despite the similar name.
Prices span an order of magnitude, from $49.95 for a download with no hardware to $759.95 at the top of the Off-Grid AI range. What arrives varies just as widely: some ship a 64 or 128 GB drive, one ships nothing physical at all, and one is still pre-Kickstarter. What Actually Ships, by Name
Three of the seven competitors do not publish the names of the models they ship. BunkerAI describes six models only as Fast, Reasoning, Logic, Math, Expert and Creative. PortableMind refers to "the Qwen 3.5 roster" without giving a count. DrAcher names thirteen models using only its own internal aliases. Since this comparison makes an issue of that, the Off-Grid AI manifest is published in full rather than described.
Five models ship. Qwen3.6-35B-A3B-Instruct serves as the top-tier expert model at 20.61 GB. Qwen2.5-14B-Instruct is the everyday primary at 8.37 GB. Meta-Llama-3.1-8B-Instruct is the compatibility and low-memory fallback at 4.58 GB. Qwen2.5-VL-3B-Instruct handles vision for the Scout feature at 1.80 GB. Phi-4-mini-instruct powers Companion at 2.32 GB.
All five are Q4_K_M quantised GGUF files totalling roughly 37.7 GB together, and the vision model ships with its projector file. Which model runs depends on the host machine: the 8B is the fallback for constrained memory, the 14B is the default, and the 35B is for machines with enough memory to hold it. You can add your own GGUF models alongside these, limited only by remaining space on the drive.
For a self-reliant buyer, published names and sizes are not a technical nicety. They are what lets you check independent benchmarks before you buy, verify the licensing on what you are running, and calculate in advance whether your hardware will reach the larger model or spend its life on the fallback. An alias forecloses all three.
The Geographic Layer, and What Citations Actually Rest On
Three of the seven competitors ship a map you can pan and search, and one goes considerably further. PortableMind's $199 PRO Navigator performs turn-by-turn routing across the US road network with a GPS receiver included in the box. That is a genuine navigation product, and on road routing with live positioning it does something Off-Grid AI does not.
What no competitor site mentions is the rest of the geographic stack: topographic contours, terrain layers, trail data, elevation, waypoints or coordinate entry. Every competitor map claim describes streets and addresses. None of the seven describes an AI that can query the map at all. Ask Off-Grid AI for the nearest mapped water source and the location is read from map data, then the treatment guidance comes from the cited library — the geographic fact is retrieved rather than guessed at by the model.
On accuracy, two competitors make a real effort. OffGrid AI Toolkit sells an upgrade layer instructing the model to flag claims it cannot support. PortableMind attaches a confidence rating to every photo identification and publishes a benchmark it graded itself, reporting 9% of survival answers wrong on its small model. Both treat the problem as real, and both work by instructing a model rather than by binding an answer to a document. Meanwhile four of the seven market the opposite of restraint as the feature.
That distinction is the whole argument. Off-Grid AI's Intel mode answers from retrieved evidence, names the document, and says so when the evidence is not there. In a grid-down situation, an answer you can trace back to a specific page in a specific manual is a different category of thing from an answer that merely sounds authoritative.
The Unrestricted Toggle, and What It Actually Does
Stopping the comparison at the cited path would be the same selective reporting this article criticises, because Off-Grid AI ships an open chat mode as well. There are two ways to ask a question. Intel is the cited path: it retrieves first, names its sources, and declines when the evidence is thin. Companion is open chat with the loaded models, or any GGUF model added by the user. Companion answers are not cited, and that is the point of it.
Companion carries an Unrestricted toggle, so it is fair to ask how that differs from the uncensored marketing quoted elsewhere in this comparison. It differs by exactly this much: turning it on deletes the roughly seven lines of instruction normally placed in front of the user's message — be honest about uncertainty, decline clearly harmful requests, do not fabricate citations, send survival and medical questions to the Intel tab. Those lines are replaced with an empty string. That is the entire mechanism.
What it does not do is unlock the model. Llama, Qwen, Phi and Gemma have refusals trained into their weights, and nothing here touches those. Ask one of them something it was trained to decline and it will still decline. There is no output filter being switched off, because there is no output filter on that path to begin with. The acknowledgement screen says as much: for a genuinely unrestricted experience, use a community uncensored model.
Three things do change. The model stops redirecting survival and medical questions to Intel, so you get an uncited chat answer instead of being sent to the tab where answers are checked against sources. The medical disclaimer is suppressed. And you can supply your own system prompt of up to 4,000 characters in the slot the standard instructions came out of. The toggle is off by default, requires a one-time acknowledgement you must actively dismiss, displays a persistent unrestricted badge while active, and is re-checked on the server for every message rather than trusted from the browser. The acknowledgement also states that chats are stored unencrypted on the device. Intel is unaffected by any of it, and the toggle is not sold as a paid upgrade.
Where a Competitor Wins, Why Wikipedia Is Left Out, and How to Read Any Comparison
A comparison whose author wins every row is one you should discount, so here are six cases where something else is the better buy. If you want the whole of English Wikipedia offline, Trove ships roughly 90 GB of it. If you want road navigation with hardware, PortableMind's $199 PRO Navigator includes a GPS receiver and turn-by-turn US routing. If you are counting documents, DrAcher publishes 18,003 against roughly 1,100. If you want a medically tuned model specifically, OffGrid AI Toolkit ships MedGemma. If price decides it, Off-Grid AI is the most expensive product here at both ends of its range, against $49.95 for OffGrid Drive with no hardware and $70 for BunkerAI with a 128 GB drive. And if you want an AI with no limits on what it will say, four of these products market exactly that.
Offline Wikipedia is the one competitor feature that generates the most questions, so leaving it out deserves an explanation rather than silence. Intel makes a specific promise: every answer names the document it came from, and that document is stable and vetted. Wikipedia cannot carry that promise, because it is community edited and mutable by design — a strength in an encyclopedia and a problem in a citation. A citation is only worth something if the thing it points at is still the same thing tomorrow.
The larger issue is what mixing does. Fold Wikipedia into a cited library and every answer inherits the reliability of the weakest source available to it, because the retrieval layer does not know which shelf it pulled from. That does not raise Wikipedia to the standard of a vetted manual; it lowers every vetted manual to the standard of an open wiki. If a browsable offline encyclopedia is what you want on the drive, Trove ships one, which is why it heads the list above.
One line in the original comparison is not sourced from a company's own site and is flagged accordingly: a BunkerAI drive was purchased and could not be made to run, on one Mac and two separate Windows PCs. That is one unit on three machines, their support was not contacted, and there may already be a fix. Finally, claims in this category decay quickly and several of these companies do not agree with themselves. Trove was pre-Kickstarter at the time of writing. Docket's site contradicts itself on Linux support. BunkerAI contradicts itself on both price and Linux. OffGrid AI Toolkit gives three different memory minimums across its own pages. None of that is stated as a failing — it is stated so you check the date, then check the source yourself.
Common Questions
An offline AI USB drive is a storage device loaded with one or more language models and a reference library, designed to run entirely on your own computer with no internet connection and no cloud service behind it. You plug it in, the software runs locally, and you can ask questions about survival, medical, or repair topics the same way you would query an online assistant — except nothing leaves the machine.
For anyone building genuine self-reliance, the appeal is straightforward. Printed manuals do not search well under pressure, and online tools disappear the moment connectivity does. A local system sits between the two: searchable like a database, available like a book. The category has grown quickly enough that eight distinct products now compete in it, which is precisely why comparing them on specifications rather than marketing has become necessary.
The important caveat is that these drives are not self-contained computers. The host machine does the processing, so the capability you actually get depends heavily on the laptop or desktop you plug the drive into.
Because those are two different claims, and only one of them was actually verified. Every competitor row in the comparison was built by searching that company's own published pages. When a search returned nothing on offline routing, or topographic data, or citation behaviour, the honest report is that the company does not mention it — not that the capability does not exist.
A product may well support something its marketing never bothers to describe. Stating otherwise would be manufacturing an advantage out of a gap in someone else's copywriting. Holding to that rule costs the comparison several rows it could otherwise have won outright, which is the point of having the rule.
For a buyer, the practical takeaway is to treat "not mentioned" as an instruction to go ask the vendor directly before purchasing on that basis.

Model names matter because they are the only way to check independent benchmarks, verify licensing, or estimate how much memory a model will actually demand from your machine. An alias tells you nothing you can verify.

Two products do not publish a document count at all. BunkerAI describes a survival, medical and repair library without quantifying it, and PortableMind describes a six-category field manual covering water, fire, first aid, shelter, signal and food. OffGrid AI Toolkit ships no document library whatsoever — what it provides is a prompt library, listed as 500 or more on one page and as hundreds on another.
File counts and page counts measure different things. A bulk government archive and a smaller reviewed corpus are different design choices, and on a straight file count the larger archive wins. Page counts describe depth better than file counts do, which is why Off-Grid AI publishes one, though no competitor currently does — so there is nothing to compare it against.

More than most vendors admit. Off-Grid AI states 8 GB of RAM minimum with 16 GB recommended, an Intel Core i5 or i7 or AMD Ryzen 5 or 7 from 2020 or later, and an optional GPU that cuts response time sharply — NVIDIA on Windows, Apple Silicon on macOS 14 or later. The host computer does the work, not the drive.
Competitor disclosure varies widely. Trove states 8 GB minimum and 16 GB recommended with no GPU required. PortableMind recommends 16 GB, or 8 GB using its fast preset. OffGrid Drive lists 8 GB with macOS 11+ or Windows 10/11 64-bit. BunkerAI recommends 8 GB with no CPU or GPU requirement published. OffGrid AI Toolkit scales from 8 GB for its 4 billion model to 32 GB for its 27 billion model, though its own pages give three different minimums. Docket Survival says only "any modern computer with a USB 3.0+ port," and DrAcher states no requirements anywhere on its site.
Check your own machine before you buy anything in this category. An underpowered laptop will run the smallest fallback model slowly regardless of which drive is plugged into it, and no vendor's marketing can change that.
